Kakshas

Kakshas and their interpretation in Prashna.

Overview

In Prashna, a Kaksha is a fine subdivision of a zodiac sign used within the Ashtakavarga framework.

Each sign of 30° is divided into 8 equal sections, and each section is called a Kaksha.

One Kaksha therefore measures:

30° ÷ 8 = 3°45′

This creates a more precise layer inside each sign. Instead of looking only at the sign occupied by a Graha, Kaksha analysis shows which smaller section of the sign the Graha currently occupies.

What Kakshas are used for?

Kakshas are used in Ashtakavarga-based interpretation to refine the condition of a Graha inside a sign.

In practical terms, they help answer questions such as:

• In which exact eighth of the sign is the Graha placed?

• Which part of the sign is being activated?

• How can sign-based results be refined by a smaller internal division?

In Prashna, Kakshas are primarily used as a structural and interpretive layer inside Ashtakavarga, allowing more detailed analysis than simple sign placement alone.

How Kakshas are calculated in Prashna

For every Graha, the software:

1. takes the Graha’s zodiacal longitude,

2. determines the current Rashi,

3. determines the Graha’s degree within that Rashi,

4. divides that degree by 3.75°,

5. and assigns the Graha to one of the 8 Kakshas of that sign.

So the sign is divided as follows:

| Kaksha | Degree range inside the sign |

|--------|------------------------------|

| 1 | 0°00′ – 3°45′ |

| 2 | 3°45′ – 7°30′ |

| 3 | 7°30′ – 11°15′ |

| 4 | 11°15′ – 15°00′ |

| 5 | 15°00′ – 18°45′ |

| 6 | 18°45′ – 22°30′ |

| 7 | 22°30′ – 26°15′ |

| 8 | 26°15′ – 30°00′ |

Internally, Prashna stores for each Graha:

• the current Rashi

• the Kaksha index within that Rashi

• the global Kaksha index across the zodiac

• the exact degree range of that Kaksha

This makes Kaksha data available for deeper Ashtakavarga interpretation and future feature expansion.

Scope of the current implementation

The current implementation in Prashna calculates the active Kaksha placement of each Graha and stores it in the chart context.

This means the software currently provides:

• exact Kaksha location per Graha

• degree range of the Kaksha

• sign-based Kaksha indexing

• integration into the Ashtakavarga data structure

This is the foundational layer on which further interpretive and visual features can be built.

Interpretation in Prashna

The Kaksha feature in Prashna is intended as a precision layer rather than a completely separate predictive system.

Its main interpretive value is:

• to show where exactly within a sign a Graha is placed,

• to support fine-grained Ashtakavarga analysis,

• and to prepare the basis for more advanced transit and strength interpretation.

A Graha in the same sign may express somewhat differently depending on whether it is placed at the beginning, middle, or end of the sign. Kaksha analysis helps make this distinction visible in a structured way.

In this version of Prashna, Kaksha interpretation should therefore be understood as:

• a sub-sign positional refinement

• connected to Ashtakavarga logic

• useful for more detailed chart reading

• especially relevant when subtle internal differences within a sign matter

Kaksha Table (Explanation)

The Kaksha table shows the current Kaksha position of each Graha and Lagna in the chart.

It identifies which eighth of the sign the planet occupies and provides additional information useful for refined interpretation within the Ashtakavarga framework.

Each row represents one Graha.

Status Indicator ( 🟢 / 🔴 )

This indicator shows whether the Kaksha is favorable or unfavorable according to the Ashtakavarga bindu distribution.

🟢 Favourable Kaksha

The Graha receives a bindu (point) in this Kaksha from its own Bininnashtakavarga.

🔴 Unfavourable Kaksha

No bindu is present in that Kaksha.

This allows a quick visual assessment of whether the Graha is positioned in a supportive or weaker section of the sign.

Rashi

This column shows the zodiac sign number in which the Graha is currently located.

Kaksha Number

This column indicates which of the eight Kakshas within the sign the Graha occupies.

Global Kaksha Index

This value identifies the Kaksha across the entire zodiac.

Since the zodiac has:

12 signs × 8 Kakshas = 96 Kakshas

each Kaksha can be uniquely indexed from 1 to 96.

This index is mainly used internally by the calculation engine and allows Kaksha positions to be referenced globally.

Kaksha Lord

Each Kaksha is traditionally associated with a planetary ruler.

| 1 | Saturn|

|---|-------|

| 2 | Jupiter |

| 3 | Mars |

| 4 | Sun |

| 5 | Venus |

| 6 | Mercury |

| 7 | Moon |

| 8 | Lagna |

The Kaksha lord can influence how the Graha expresses its results in that part of the sign.

Distance Inside Kaksha

The final column shows how far the Graha is positioned inside the Kaksha.

This indicates the Graha lies 3.64° from the beginning of the Kaksha.

It helps determine:

• whether the Graha has just entered the Kaksha

• whether it is near the middle

• or whether it is close to leaving the Kaksha.

Summary

A Kaksha is one of the 8 equal subdivisions of a sign, each measuring 3°45′.

In Prashna, Kakshas are used to refine Graha placement inside the sign and to support more detailed Ashtakavarga-oriented interpretation.

They are not treated as a separate chart or divisional system, but as a fine positional layer that helps reveal more nuanced astrological meaning.
